Destructor Bridge, Bath

The Bath Western Riverside site is located approximately 800m west of the city centre and is adjacent to and directly south of Victoria Park.  The site includes approximately 500m of river frontage.  The site extends to approximately 17.9 hectares with the largest part to the south of the River Avon, and includes three river crossings at Victoria Bridge, Destructor Bridge and the old gas works pedestrian bridge, now used as a gas pipe crossing.

The redevelopment will create a new residential quarter including up to 2,281 houses and apartments, student accommodation, a primary school and other community facilities together with associated infrastructure such as a new landmark bridge over the river, roads, footways, cycleways and public open space.


PROJECT OUTLINE:

The Project Works to be undertaken are as follows:

  • ¬†Deconstruction and removal off site of the existing Destructor Bridge.
  • Form new abutments around existing bridge abutments including bridge foundations and the installation of new river wall ties along the section of river wall directly in front of the abutment on the South Bank.
  • Prefabrication / site assembly, launch and final installation of new bridge deck and structure including lighting and finishes.
  • Form temporary new steps to North West corner from tow path to bridge parapet.
  • Re grading and improvement works to ramped access to North East corner from tow path to bridge abutment to include retaining structures as required, raising of existing drainage manholes and landscaping works.
  • Interim highway reconfiguration works to the North Bank including traffic signalling works to Upper Bristol Road.
